Famed “Blue Max” to race at Goodguys 47th March Meet presented by Clay Smith Cams

Del and Chuck Worsham’s “Blue Max” 1977 Ford Funny Car, a perfectly crafted replica of Raymond Beadle’s NHRA Championship winning race car will be in competition at the Goodguys 47th March Meet, March 10-12 at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield. Though the car has made several exhibition-only runs, this will mark its competition debut. The Worshams are familiar to drag racing fans as the Orange, CA based father and son team have fielded Funny Cars on the NHRA PowerAde circuit since 1997 and currently campaign the two-car Checker, Schuck's, and Kragen - sponsored team.

Their Blue Max replica created quite a stir when it made its first exhibition appearance at last season’s O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals in Ennis, Texas. On its first full run down the track, the ‘Max logged a 5.97 elapsed time – then the quickest-ever run for a Goodguys/VRA legal Nostalgia Funny Car. The current ET record for the class is held by Larry Pettit at 5.92 seconds. With their professional drag racing experience, they stand a good chance to win the event, but they will have their hands full in Bakersfield as a field of at least 15 Nostalgia Funny Cars is expected.

The Nostalgia Funny Car class was added to the Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing events in 2003. The fledgling class is the talk of the industry and the Worsham’s were bitten by the Nostalgia bug in 2003 when they attended the Goodguys March Meet to help their friend Nathan Bugg with his retro Funny Car. “We had a blast at the March Meet the last two years, camping in the pits and helping out our friends. So, we decided to recreate the Blue Max – one of my dad’s all time favorite race cars. So far, the car has gotten a lot of attention when we’ve had it in our pits at the NHRA races. It's amazing how many fans remember these historic race cars,” said Del Worsham. “We’re looking forward to going out and just having fun at this year’s March Meet. The NHRA Tour is awesome and it’s our living, but its hard work. We’re racing the Blue Max Nostalgia Funny Car to have fun.”

With close to 600 racing entries in 14 classes, The Goodguys March Meet is the world’s largest vintage drag race. Event gates open at 8am daily. For more information on the event, visit www.good-guys.com
