Westervelt
Named Head of Goodguys/VRA
Pleasanton
,
CA
– Longtime Goodguys friend and former staffer
Larry Westervelt has been named Director of the
Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing Association.
Westervelt will officially take command of his
new post, August 1st 2004.
Westervelt is a long time San Francisco Bay Area
hot rodder and was a charter member of the
Nor-Cal Early Iron hot rod club alongside
Goodguys President and Founder Gary Meadors. He
lived a stone’s throw from Fremont Drag Strip
for over 20 years and was a frequent visitor to
the fabled
Fremont
facility. He had a long rewarding career as an
airline mechanic for Pan Am, PSA and US Air. He
has been a Meadors family friend since the late
60’s and has known his current boss, Goodguys
Senior VP Marc Meadors since the latter was in
diapers.
A huge drag racing enthusiast, Westervelt’s
love and affection for Goodguys vintage drag
racing is unparalleled. He helped organize
Goodguys VRA events back in 1991 when he served
as Goodguys National Event Director overseeing
all Goodguys events. His favorites were the VRA
drag races and he helped work on rules and
policies in the formative years of the VRA
Series. He left Goodguys in 1995, returned
shortly after as a VRA Tech Liaison in the
Nostalgia Eliminator class, then became the
AA/GAS and A/GAS Liaison in 2001 – a role he
has served since.
Larry’s son Larry Jr is equally enthusiastic
about Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing and has
served as crew member on Brendan Murry’s
“Runnin’ Wild” top fuel dragster for the
last six years.
Larry is married to his wife of 40 years Lani.
The two reside in Campo,
California
near the
Sierra Nevada
mountain range.
In his new role, Westervelt will oversee and run
all aspects of the Goodguys VRA including
managing the VRA Tech staff, events management,
sponsorship relations etc. His longtime love of
and involvement in the straight line sport
should serve him well.
The Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing Association is
the world leader in promoting and producing
vintage drag racing events. The first Goodguys
Vintage Drag Racing event was staged in 1987 and
since 1994, the Goodguys West Coast Championship
Series has offered the sports only sanctioned
points series for vintage drag racing
competitors in fifteen different classes of
competition.
